Humans are not alone in suffering from isolatiom. To other mammals and many non-mammals, isolation is punishing.
When my husband and I took a safari in Kenya several years ago, our tour guide, who knew the animals intimatel, pointed out a wildebeest grazing by himself.
Wildebeests are herd animals, but this solitary one, the guide told us, was defeated when he triedl to suppland the leader of the pack. For his failure, his group had ostracized him.
